200m Zoom Winners

Published Mon 08 Feb 2021

Thanks once again to Peter Gandy of Process Integrations for his sponsorship of the 200m Zoom.  Peter, of course, is a club legend.  He was our first member selected for an Olympic team and our first Commonwealth Games representative.  He's also in the Australian All-Time 200m rankings with a 20.3s hand-timed and a 20.66s electronic.  Peter hopes to inspire local sprinters to reach similar heights as he did and believes the 200m Zoom is a great step towards doing so.

'Fastest' titles went to the defending Champions, Mitchell O'Neill and Tierney Dunne, both of whom also broke their respective club records!

Mitch's time of 21.64s beat his previous Open electronic record of 21.91s and continues his progression towards being an elite sprinter.  Tierney is making a very promising return from injury, taking nearly 1 second off the U20 Women's record, now standing at 25.01s. This also erases Liana Braithwaite's 2002 hand-timed record from the books.

Both Mitch and Tierney took home $50 as did our two lucky lane draw winners: Suzy Moran and Michael Doodson!

Cheers to those who voted in the Athletes' Choice for the supporting events.  The winning sprint was a 40m race: the shortest event Athletics Wollongong had ever held in its history!  The Masters showed the wisdom of their years, selecting standing long jump as one of their field events, to conserve energy.  The U16-Opens continued to show their affinity for the Vortex, and it was no surprise to see the 1000m picked as the "distance" event: it was the shortest possibility on offer!
