Australian Champs Recap

Published Mon 04 Apr 2022

Tremendous effort from everyone at the Australian Athletics Championships. AW had 32 members who made it onto the field of competition, with a couple more having to withdraw through illness or injury beforehand (let alone those who had a disrupted season and were unable to qualify - including two of our medalists from last year).

Speaking of medals, our representatives collected 16 over the course of the event; the bulk of those coming courtesy of Holly Rea and Delta Amidzovski. Delta, of course, also qualified for the World U20 Championships in the 100m Hurdles.

Each medal-winner had a celebratory image posted to the club instagram as the results came in. Check them out there if you want a closer look at the collage posted below. It's very encouraging to see that the club's athletes are having success across different ages and events.

Medals aren't the only way of measuring success, of course. We might not be entirely privy to the individual struggles and triumphs, but we can certainly honour our clubmates' achievements by checking out the full results listed on the club website.

The athletes receive the plaudits but there is a team behind each and every one. A shout-out to all of the respective coaches, training partners, The Bank of Mum and Dad, Mum's Taxi, etc.

As much as the Australian Championships *feel* like they should be the conclusion of the season, that's not quite the case: the University Games are on in a couple of weeks, as are the Australian Masters Games. Then it's the Oceania Athletics Championships, Commonweatlh Games, World U20s....which about brings us up to our local 2022/23 Season! We hope to see you back again for that 🙂

We also hope you'll be able to join us at Athletics Wollongong's Annual Presentation on April 30th to honour these athletes - and many more besides! Please RSVP and read more about the occasion here: https://www.athleticswollongong.org.au/events/136783/
