Going back to Cali

UPDATE: Delta Amidzovski has been announced as the youngest member of the Australian team contesting the U20 World Championships!  https://www.athletics.com.au/news/australian-junior-team-confirmed-for-cali-2022/

The World U20 Athletics Championships are being held in Colombia's sports capital of Cali, this August.

Though nothing can be counted on for sure in this day and age, it is Athletics Australia's current intention to send a national team to this event.

The selection policy for the team has been in place for quite some time, including the performance standards necessary to qualify.

Athletics Wollongong's Delta Amidzovski has surpassed the required standard for the U20 100m Hurdles a number of times.

An automatic selection in the team is the winner of the U20 National Championship, if they have attained the performance standard.

Delta won the U20 100m Hurdles National Championship this past weekend - as a 15-year-old.

As detailed in the selection policy document though, as Delta is born in 2006, her selection in the team must first be approved by the Athletics Australia Director of Performance Sustainability.  Presumably this is to ensure that a younger athlete has the required maturity and physical conditioning to handle an international sporting trip, and that such a trip would not negatively impact their development.

I believe that the family have previously received positive communications from the Director, but Delta's position on the team likely won't be official until confirmed at a Selection Meeting held during the week of April 11th.

Once the team is finalised, there will be a pre-departure camp in late May before the squad contests the Oceania Championships (to be held in Mackay) in early June.

In late July the team spends a week in Miami, Florida before going to Colombia for Worlds.

As there is a substantial associated cost with participating in the Championships, Athletics Wollongong will endeavour to assist with fundraising once the team is announced.

At this stage though, we must simply congratulate Delta on her achievement: well done!
