The NSW Combined Events Championships comprise multi-events like the decathlon, heptathlon and outdoor pentathlon. Competitors attain points for their performances per a mathematical formula that roughly equates efforts across each of the disciplines contested. Given the number of events and the wide range of skills required to perform well in all of them, multi-eventers are often considered some of the best athletes in the world.
Athletics Wollongong's Christine Shaw continued her recent success, claiming a new State Masters record during the 60-69 Women's Outdoor Pentathlon. Here leap of 3.98m set the mark and - at the conclusion of the competition - she collected another: her points totalling 3304, comfortably beating the previous record.
It wasn't quite such a comfortable margin for Anthony Howlett in the 50-59 Men's Pentathlon. Despite suffering from an injured back, Anthony found himself in 4th position with just the one event to go. A spectacular effort in the 1500m saw him push his way onto the medal dais, leapfrogging his way into 2nd place (by just 9 points).
Thomas Noakes moved up to the U20 division this season after taking out the U18s Decathlon last season. Trailing after the end of Day 1, he had a spectacular second day, overhauling the leader and winning a gold medal. Thomas saw improvement in 8 of the 10 events in compared to his performance of last year.
It was a tremendous performance by AW members and you can see their full results HERE.
