Two Athletics Wollongong members were part of the Australian team that contested the U20 World Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru: Chelsy Wayne and Delta Amidzovski.
Our clubmates felt particularly close to their success, following a trivia fundraising night that helped ease their financial burden slightly.
Delta Amidzovski was one of the stars of the Aussie effort, helping the team to their best-ever performance at a World Juniors.
Delta's first event was the Long Jump, which she won with a personal best performance. She was the only Australian individual gold medallist at the event!
Her new PB of 6.58m was the second longest by any Australian this season and now places her at #17 on the All-Time list. It also would have been good enough for 10th place at the Paris Olympics!
Delta carried this tremendous form into her "main event," the 100m Hurdles. She ran a new PB in the heats, followed by a controlled win in the semi-finals to advance to the final as an auto-qualifier. In the final, she clocked 13.24 seconds to secure another medal — this time a bronze — to add to her carry-on luggage.
This was Delta's second trip to the World Juniors for the hurdles. In her first attempt, she clipped an early hurdle in the heats and was unable to perform to her expectations. To do so well this time around, in her redemption run, showcased her character and determination.
Chelsy Wayne no doubt hopes to follow a similar arc, as she will still be eligible for the Eugene World Junior Champs in two years' time.
Her biggest throw in the discus qualifying was sadly a foul, and her longest legal effort of 48.81m wasn’t quite enough to make it into the final: she missed the top 12 who progressed by an agonizingly close 70cm.
Our Athletics Wollongong clubmates were wonderful representatives of our club and nation. We hope that their performances at World Juniors are early steps in what will be long and storied careers. Well done to you both!
