AW's Delta Amidzovski has contested the World Athletics U20 Championships in Colombia.
At only 15 years of age, Delta was the youngest member of the Australian team.
Primed for a big performance, Delta was out like a bullet in her heat of the 100m Hurdles. Unfortunately, she clipped the second hurdle which caused her to careen into the third. Delta showed great determination and maturity to finish off the race, but understandably finished in a time below her best.
From Delta: "Well, what an experience. I gave everything I had - and maybe too much. Flew out of the start but hit some hurdles. That’s sport. I could have walked away, but I didn’t. Choosing to stick it out and finish my first international race is something I’m so proud of regardless. 15 and racing against the best women in the world; wouldn’t change a thing".
She'll still be eligible for the next U20 World Championships in 2024 - and no doubt has designs on further Australian representation at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria and the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.
Well done, Delta! What a tremendous example you have been to your Athletics Wollongong clubmates. There's a whole lot more to come...
